Infinity Ward Defends Its Ridiculous DLC Pricing

Posted on 26 March 2010 by Foster

If there’s one thing you can say about Activision, it’s that they know how to squeeze every last dime out of their products.  The recently announced Stimulus Package DLC map pack for Modern Warfare 2 is no exception, and honestly the name couldn’t be more accurate.

It is a stimulus package.  For Activision’s bank account.  However, many MW2 players are throwing a hissy fit about the cost of the expansion – $15 for 5 maps, two of which are revamped maps from an older game – and are doing their very best to pretend like they’re not going to pay for it.

Speaking in response to this criticism, IW Community Manager Robert Bowling (aka FourZeroTwo) does his best to toe the party line and convince us that even though the map pack costs about a quarter of what the game runs, it’s totally going to be worth it.

From NowGamer:

“I have no doubt that anyone who downloads this map pack is going to get their money’s worth. They’re going to feel their investment is worthwhile. Because if you’re playing Modern Warfare 2 like myself or many other people do every night, that’s actually going to give you a bunch of new mileage and a bunch of extra gameplay – to really explore and discover them and to really, you know, come up with new tactics and experience them in a whole new way. Regardless of what the price is you’re going to feel your money’s well-spent.”

Whatever.  I know I’ve defended the right of game publishers to distribute their content the way they see fit in the past,  but there’s a big difference between working in the best interest of the company and outright fucking your players.  Activision and Infinty Ward know that people don’t want to spend that much on DLC, but they also know that people will if they have to.

When you screw people over just because you can, you have officially crossed into doucheville.
