GDC Devs Confirm Existence of DS2

Posted on 14 March 2010 by Foster

Despite the fact that Nintendo has vehemently denied the existence of a successor to their hand-held DS system, it would appear that the DS2 is a very real thing.  At least, according to a bunch of devs at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference that apparently have their hands on the hardware.

Step Inside this Giant Ball of Death

Posted on 13 March 2010 by Foster

One of the more quirky and interesting entries in this year’s Game Developer’s Conference has to be the Virtusphere, from Virtual 360 Ventures.  Essentially, the Virtusphere is a giant American Gladiators-type cage-ball-thing, only it sits on tracks that prevent it from rolling around and killing hundreds of innocent people.

While in the sphere, players are equipped with a specially-designed virtual reality helmet that updates its view in real time as they look around.  They are also equipped with a shotgun, presumably to end their own life upon becoming trapped in this metal monstrosity.

Valve Continues their Awesome Marketing with a BSOD

Posted on 12 March 2010 by Foster

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a BSOD refers to the “blue screen of death” that you PC users often see when trying to get your non-Macintosh computers to do…..anything.  After accepting a Pioneer Award at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference, Gabe Newell (dude in charge at Valve), tried to give a slideshow presentation but unfortunately suffered a blue screen of death mid-slide.

Apparently the slide that was lost was supposed to reveal a bunch of answers to Valve legends, but I guess now we’ll never know.  Then again, some people that are better with code than I am say the error code given in the message decodes to “”S U S : P E N D … U N T ( I ) L … E E E,” so I bet we’ll be getting some answers come E3.

Don’t quote me on that, though.

GDC’s Into the Pixel Exhibit Combines Games and Art

Posted on 12 March 2010 by Foster

One of the coolest things at this year’s Game Developer’s conference seems to be the “Into the Pixel” exhibit, in which talented artists created paintings and other works that represent a variety of video games.  While you and I may not be at GDC, that doesn’t mean we can’t check out some of the great work on display, courtesy of the interwebz.

I’ve included some of my favorites after the break, but be sure to hit up Joystiq for their full gallery.

PlayStation Move is Belle of the Ball at GDC 2010

Posted on 11 March 2010 by Foster

The just-revealed PlayStation Move motion control system looks to be the belle of the ball at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference, with most game news sites and blogs either gushing over it or devoting significant amounts of their screen space to talking about it.  You know, because we’ve never seen a gaming system that featured motion control.  Anyway, here’s a roundup of all the big names and what they’ve covered so far:
